Dartmoor Photography

Keen landscape photographer based on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park.

An ex military Mountain Leader who now prefers to capture the beauty of our moors, mountains and coastline on his cameras instead of constantly trying to find the hardest route up them.

Welcome to my website, www.dartmoorphotography.com

Please be aware that I have an old site dartmoorphotography.co.uk which is in the process of being closed down in favour of this site

I live on the edge of Dartmoor in the South Devon ancient wool town of Chudleigh with my (hugely tolerant and understanding)  wife, daughter, spaniels and cat.

I'm incredibly fortunate  to have Haytor Dartmoor about 15 minutes drive in one direction and several beaches about 15 minutes the other way (happy days!)

I come from an (ex) military background and  in-between doing various operational tours and general military life I was fortunate enough to spend a few of those years being paid to walk and climb in some pretty exciting places around Europe and N. America . Something that I noticed very early on was that both clients and colleagues loved having their pictures taken doing cool things in amazing places which quickly led to me buying a better camera and going through a painful process of working out why  my  images didn't look much like the ones in the magazines, time to get learning!

Jump forward a number of years and I was working in civi street for an Outdoor Clothing Brand called Páramo and the digital revolution started to really kick off.

This suited me fine because, whilst I have great patience for the light and weather I was always terrible at waiting for film to be developed. Quite simply the control freak in me hated giving the processing to someone else. A Canon 300D SLR was the answer and a crash course in early photo shop as I could see the advantage to .raw files from day one

Making images  is  technically 'just' a hobby which gives me the freedom to do it where when I want

Kit:

I still shoot on Canon DSLR's  and use:

Canon Full Frame EOS 5DSr and 5D MKIV (depending on the situation and output required)

Canon EF 17 and 24 II TSE lenses

Canon EF 16-35 f4, 24-70 2.8 mkII and a 100-400 MKII Lenses

I'm a huge advocated for the use of filters, mainly because I enjoy the challenge, I  find it fun and secondly because when I'm in the right mood it can slow me down a bit and make me think hard(er) which has often then  led to a more satisfying image (in my very humble opinion). Having tried and been highly frustrated by 'other' filter systems I've exclusively used Lee Filters for years and plan to carry on using them for as along as I can. Simply put, I find them the best thing for the job.

Tripods I use gitzo for both stills and video work. Head wise I use  the Really Right Stuff BH-55 along with their L brackets and dedicated heads for video.

Bags wise I use f-stop gear and seem to have finally found something that is comfortable, light and practical. Its not just another heavy huge black over padded uncomfortable box on my back with straps!

I now work in the imaging world for a leading camera manufacturer in a sales role and think I probably have one of the best jobs that I could ever have imagined.

PLEASE NOTE that any opinions expressed on this site are strictly my own and not that of my employer. If someone wants to contact me regarding the 'day job' I can easily be found on linkedin.

Ethics:

Some folk get very excited about how, where and when images are made and their perceived 'ethics'. Personally I'm not a fan of lots of processing and I don't composite images etc but fair play to those that do as long as there is honesty involved? I have absolutely no issues in making images in areas that have been photographed before, that's how I often lean why something works  or more importantly why some things don't work.

I am constantly being influenced by other photographers and on the links page you can see who they are. Iconic images are often that because they are beautiful and work. I'm not going to be put off making my interpretation of it by someone else's rants. its  my hobby after all...

Now for the boring bit...
